So, the Alabama correction department - which recently reinstituted chain gangs - resorted to embarrassment. Soon, some female staff members began quitting or filing complaints, officials said. Officials even took pictures of the inmates - called "gunslingers" - exposing themselves and threatened to send the photos to their mothers. Punishment such as loss of good time and disciplinary tickets didn't change the behavior. Some of the state's prisoners were continually exposing themselves to female correction officers and counselors. As of 2012, there were 16,591 individuals incarcerated in Connecticut, with 15,523 of those being male and 1,068 being female. Using the uniforms for identification is fine, Leonardo said, however "It shouldn't be done to embarrass and harass people."īut in Alabama - a state notorious for its tough prison policies - that's exactly what is happening.
